Aloha to tropical drinks
Posted Thursday, January 26, 2006 4:38:16 PM by Kate Grant

They have a bad reputation, being a ladies drink, something a "real man" wouldn't be caught dead drinking in public.

But they're not as "girly" as you would expect. Tropical drinks have the potential of being very potent if you let them. Tropical drinkLittle umbrella aside, when was the last time you tried a tropical sunrise drink? (Okay, okay, we'll give you the recipe: Mix together pineapple juice, orange juice, rum and triple sec, and pore over a glass half filled with crushed ice. Top with half a shot of grenadine and a finish with a cherry).

Exotic tropical drinks will knock you over in no time, especially because they're very refreshing, and are so easy to drink.

Sometimes, you won't even notice the alcohol in them. Just imagine yourself and your significant other, on the white sandy beach on a tropical island, or a lovely coastline somewhere in the world, waiters are rushing in and out to bring you more and more drinks and refreshments, because its so hot... Believe me, you'll crave those drinks, and "single malt" will have the sound of a distant memory... Oh, I can't wait for my vacation!

Serving drinks, staying awake

A low-hanging fog of tobacco smoke hangs in the air. People are crowded together, bunched in small circles, holding colorful cocktails and bottles of beer. The dull roar of conversation blends with the thumping of the music, usually the latest hits. The rhythm of the music penetrates a young man's veins and he starts to rock to it, slightly off tempo. He is fairly intoxicated, and the music has convinced him to ask the women lined up along the dark wooden bar to dance with him. With each new woman, he gets another rejection. "You aren't as charming as you think you are," Dan Sigmon, a junior in textiles and apparel management, said about being drunk and trying to talk to the opposite sex. Sigmon, a bartender at Rum Runners in downtown Raleigh, would know....

'Turistas' is more splash than slash

So let's see. You're in the hinterlands of Brazil, and the bus you've been on for hours just toppled over the side of a hill. It'll be at least another half a day until the next one comes. But you see a pair of girls walking down the road sipping fruity drinks, and, forgetting that you're stranded but not that you're on vacation, you hike for your own fruity drink. Back home you'd go to a Jamba Juice, but here you turn up a cabaña next to a shimmering oasis. The beer is plentiful and the hip-hop seductive, so you, your cute sister, her hot blond friend, some Australian chick (obligatorily in cornrows, but crucially a Portuguese speaker), and two mates from London (one far more exasperating than the other) drink and dance. But when you wake up the next day, someone's run off with everything, including your group's common sense....

FOREIGN CORRESPONDENCE: Cambodia, where classy and tacky clash

Ashley Macpherson, 44, has lived in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, for nine months. She is a native of Zambia with a background in clinical psychology. Macpherson works for a Cambodian-based nongovernmental organization, building a native staff that can better deliver services to rural Khmers with psychosocial problems. Q. Can you describe your neighborhood? I live in what could be described as the "embassy block"; my neighbors are ambassadors and actual embassies. Interspersed with these are homes of wealthy Khmer who live in enormous, three-story homes and invariably rent out two of the floors to foreigners. I am centrally located and can walk to the Mekong riverside, the palace, the shops and markets. The market is one block away and is a typical Khmer market that sells fruit, vegetables and meat....

A Gulf Coast Sarasota sojourn
Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 7:02:23 AM by Blog57 Team
As a child I can remember my family driving the old Ford station wagon across Tamiami Trail while I joined my brothers and sister counting alligators sunning on cypress tree stumps along the dangerous canal-flanked two-laner. We were on our way across the Everglades past Fort Myers towards Longboat Key off Sarasota for a week in a cramped two-bedroom beach apartment. After unpacking we would run out on the brilliant sandy beach and collect shells or fish in the surf for catfish or whiting. The days were wistfully filled with sun, sand, the illusive search for the rare lion's paw shell, and fresh fish dinners; nights ended with my father reading chapters from C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Surprisingly, that 1960s idyll can still exist in the Sarasota region today with perhaps a Game Boy or laptop thrown in. After leaving 1-75 (exits 193-213) families can spend reasonably priced vacations on the mainland and string of barrier islands from Venice in the southern end of Sarasota County north along Nokomis, Casey Key, Siesta Key, Lido Key, St....
