| The nicest thing about soft drinks was always the advertisement | | Posted Thursday, January 26, 2006 4:36:03 PM by Kate Grant | When I'm thinking "soft drinks", I think about all those beautiful commercials and magazine ads from the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. Because they were beautiful. So much so, people collect them now and sometimes even hang them on their walls as art. All those men and women in the Sprite or Coke commercials looked so nice, and had such good life, we thought.
You had to believe, that if you buy those soft drinks, you'll be just like them. The soft drink industry business leaders surely new what they were doing. This industry had a lot of influence even in its early years. Did you know, for instance, that the way Santa Claus is dressed today, was influenced by the way he was depicted in a Coca Cola company advertising just over a century ago?
Those were the colors of the costume he wore, and does, till this day. Soft drink cans and bottles, in vending machines wherever you look, and the association of soft drink with fast food conglomerates like Macdonald's, became a major health issue in America, where a large percentage of society fights obesity.
Sugary soft drinks are associated with poor health, causing diabetes and other related illnesses. Even Diet soft drinks are considered bad for you. But not all soft drinks are bad. If you drink in moderation, trading a piece of fruit for a glass of fruit juice is okay from time to time, when you do... | |

| | | Newest Sin Tax Targets: Soft Drinks, Vending Machines, Drive-Throughs | | Posted Sunday, January 21, 2007 12:55:35 PM by Blog57 Team | | West Virginia lawmakers passed a series of bills during a special session in November 2006 that would raise the sales tax on soft drinks and vending machine items to 6 percent while reducing the food tax to 3 percent by 2008. The legislative package was a compromise, reached after Gov. Joe Manchin (D) initially called for a tax increase on junk food and soft drinks. The West Virginia legislature's action fits a pattern that has been increasingly visible recently. Shift Toward Excise Taxes A recent study ("State Tax Trends Over Twenty-Five Years: Tax Increases Down, Revenue Sources Shifting") by Daniel Clifton and Elizabeth Karasmeighan of Americans for Tax Reform shows a shift away from broad-based income tax increases and sales taxes to targeted tax increases, particularly taxes on products some consider sinful, such as tobacco and alcohol.... | |

| | | Abbott takes a hard line on soft drinks | | Posted Monday, November 27, 2006 12:58:50 PM by Blog57 Team | | TONY ABBOTT has singled out soft drinks as a major contributor to childhood obesity and has flagged the idea of a taxpayer-funded campaign warning of the dangers of regular consumption. Speaking after a conference on diabetes among indigenous Australians, the health minister said if soft drinks were consumed other than as an "occasional treat" they could be "very harmful". "It's distressing that soft drinks are overwhelmingly the biggest single sellers in our supermarkets right around Australia and the problem with soft drink is that it's basically water spoilt," he said. "What the Government ought to do is help get the message out there that soft drink is all very well as an occasional treat but it's not something that should be a staple of kids' diets." Three months ago the soft drinks industry said it was putting new dietary guidelines on its cans telling people how much a single can contributes to the average daily calorie intake.... | |

| | | Nationwide sugary soft drink tax? | | Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 6:52:58 AM by Blog57 Team | | They've done it to cigarettes and to alcohol, now sugary soft drinks could be subject to a tax. Doctors from all over the country are in Las Vegas debating whether they should approve a tax proposal aimed at fighting obesity in kids. This proposal doesn't just target soda. Any drink which is sweetened with sugar would be subject to the tax. That means those popular sports and energy drinks. Right now several states have taxes on sugary drinks but this is an effort to make a national tax and not everyone's on board. The U.S. Department of Agriculture finds that per capita soft drink consumption has increased almost 500 percent in the last 50 years. Doctors in town for the American Medical Association's House of Delegates meeting are addressing that issue.... | |

| | | Soft drinks will be out of stock | | Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 3:00:27 AM by Blog57 Team | | You may be able to buy core brands of fizzy drinks, such as Coke and Fanta in some pack size this summer, but other brands like Fanta Pine and Tab may be out of stock. This is according to SAB Head of Communications, Michael Farr, who on Friday said that due to the carbon dioxide shortage experienced in the last three to four weeks, lower volume brands like Fanta Pine, Fanta Grape, Sprite Zero and Tab may be in short supply. Coke and Fanta, which are core brands, should be available in stores, however only in some pack sizes. Demand exceeds production The carbon dioxide shortage has been caused by production problems experienced by the major supplier of the gas. "The shortages that are expected in November and December, even though full production is anticipated before the end of November, will be because of demand exceeding full production as it always does in the December period," Farr said in a statement.... | |

| | | Living Well: Doing fast foods right is a heavy challenge | | Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 1:04:27 PM by Blog57 Team | | Consider that early last week KFC announced it would reformulate the Colonel's famed recipe to eliminate the trans fats from unhealthy cooking oil. KFC officials revealed an arduous process of making crispy chicken that still tasted satisfyingly fried. The company said consumers in two test markets noticed no difference, but the finger-lickin' jury will weigh in now that customers know there is a difference. By midweek, New York City, where the city health department continues to consider its proposal to ban all trans fat from its restaurants, was taking steps to require franchise restaurants to list calories on their menus. This new health department plan calls for applying the rule to restaurants that serve standardized portions and already disclose calorie information in some form voluntarily.... | |
