The advantages of protein drinks
Posted Tuesday, January 31, 2006 11:29:52 AM by Kate Grant

If you want to keep those muscles and their shape after workout, try protein drinks. A friend of mine swears by them, and even insist they taste good... I doubt it, but still, if you are training for the next "Mr. World" competition, you might want to help yourself a little by enhancing you energy.

Protein drinksProtein drinks are come as protein powder and are a buy product of cheese. If you are lactose intolerant, you can get soy protein drinks as well.

You can drink them in their pure form, without adding anything to them, or use the protein powder to make wonderful shakes. Here's a recipe for such a shake:

Take two scoops of your favorite protein drink mix, add 10 oz of apple juice or orange juice, 1 scoop of ice, half a banana and 4 strawberries. Mix everything in a blender, until smooth. You can also make milkshakes with ice cream in different flavors - they're the best!

Sometimes protein drinks are used as supplements for elderly people, and their different nutrition needs. Adding such a supplement help them get the protein they need even if they are not eating properly.

It's diet season. And with all the mixed messages out there, a diet cheat sheet may help keep you fit and focused on any diet resolutions. Food and diet - Be spontaneous: Come up with a list of preapproved low-calorie foods to avoid a lot of on-the-spot decisions. - Fast food is OK: There are low-calorie options available. Learn them before arriving at the restaurant. - Singles only: Buy single-serving snack foods; never buy in bulk. - Read it: Check food labels, and never eat anything that contains more than 15 calories without thinking about it. - Buy frozen and ready-to-eat: Time-pressed people should stock up on healthy, low-calorie frozen foods (e.g., Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice or Kashi), cereals and soups....

Tokyo café society goes for a hipper diet

TOKYO: Who would have thought such a thing would come to pass; a gooey cheesecake that contains no sugar, eggs, milk or cheese. Slashing the calorie count down to a third of what most cheesecakes contain, this one is easy on the digestive system and eliminates any reason to hit the gym afterward for a guilt-ridden workout. Available at the Cafe 8 in Tokyo's Nakameguro district, it is on display in a glass case next to other delectable desserts like mango pudding, baked apple pie and gâteau au chocolat, and the same formula applies to them all. These days the newest trend in Tokyo cafés is vegan (and macrobiotic), where all traces of animal protein have been deleted from the cooking/serving process. And not just for desserts. Fish is out. Butter, milk and yogurt are out. The good news is: the fare is delightful to behold, both on the eye and on the palate....

Copper's link to Alzheimer's is still being researched
Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 2:54:32 AM by Blog57 Team
The buzz started with bunnies three years ago. Lab rabbits fed high-fat diets and tap water developed Alzheimer's symptoms; those on distilled water didn't. The tap water was found to contain copper (copper pipes can leach minute amounts of the mineral into water). So scientists laced the distilled water with copper and those bunnies developed the protein clumps called plaques that are signs of Alzheimer's. A new study shows that humans may be similarly affected. About 3,700 Chicagoans, age 65 and older, with diets high in saturated fats, trans fats and copper had accelerated cognitive trouble: difficulty thinking, learning and remembering. But before you run out and buy all the bottled water you can find or yank the copper from your basement, stop and consider two words: aluminum and cholesterol....

WHO IS SHE? Moe Kelso is a model, actor, television producer and visual artist. After doing some commercials and small roles in TV and film, she got the bug to do more. "Everyone wants to have their own show," she says, laughing. Maybe so, but not everyone successfully produces and hosts one, as Kelso has done; she's completed 46 episodes of Look Alike for Citytv. Her paintings (see inset) will be at Black Line Studio (577 King W., 416-850-8227) from Nov. 14. FUNNY FACES When Kelso started painting from magazine photographs, something strange happened. "These gorgeous models came out looking overweight and their perfect features were distorted." She saw her wonky style as a rebellion against the pursuit of perfection in fashion and TV. PERFECT DAY IN TORONTO "I live in Little Italy, so I'd walk down to Starbucks on College to pick up a latté, then walk to Trinity Bellwoods Park....

It's Visser's time to stand tall

Asked to describe his style of play on a questionnaire from Wake Forest's sports information department, Demon Deacons center Kyle Visser answered, "Elegant."Merriam-Webster defines that as "refined grace." But coach Skip Prosser hopes to use additional adjectives when talking about the 6-foot-11, 255-pound senior's performance this season.More than elegance, Wake needs efficiency, consistency, productivity and an aura of unwavering confidence from their only experienced post player. And Wake needs it starting Saturday, when it opens the season against James Madison at 2 p.m. in Winston-Salem.While producing some highlight moments, Visser's career has been "mercurial," to use Prosser's word. He started games early last year, played well for a spell, then lost confidence and sank into a reserve role.Though leading the Deacs in blocked shots with 40, he averaged just 5.0 points and 4.3 rebounds playing an average of 17 minutes a game....

Beyond soft drinks

Millswood Middle School students, John Aguilos, 12, Harland Kenyon, 14, and Ernie Delacruz, 13, rushed down the street after school Tuesday and into Lodi Food and Liquor. They peered into the soft drink cases, mulling over neon-colored, 24-ounce cans of energy drinks, debating whether they liked "Pimp Juice" better than "Hyphy Juice" or "Monster." ....

Terrier can't handle eating cold treats
Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 12:51:00 PM by Blog57 Team
Dear Dr. Kimmey: Our 7-year-old Boston terrier, Abby, has recently begun vomiting immediately after consuming cold treats (e.g. frozen custard, Frostee Paws, crushed ice, lactose-free ice cream, etc.), although she can drink cold water or lick a Popsicle without any reaction. Previously, cold treats were not a problem. Abby's vet performed a complete physical and pronounced her in "excellent physical condition." We are all perplexed and can only imagine that it might be stress related or perhaps an ulcer, but those appear remote possibilities. Any idea on what the problem might be? Mark Fedo and Karen Kasanic Dear Mark and Karen: I can't definitively say why Abby suddenly started vomiting after consuming cold treats, but I have a few ideas....

'Thin is from Pluto?' and new crop of diet books

Holiday eating season is just around the corner, so for inspiration, I looked to the latest crop of diet books. I've got thousands out in the barn - in fact, I built the barn out of diet books - and they just keep on coming.Diet books are like weeds: rip 'em, burn 'em, whack 'em with a stick - they love it. Maybe you can get rid of one, but you better believe that two more will take its place. But before I toss them out there, let me run through a few for you:"Maria Shaw's Astro Diet: The Amazing Breakthrough Diet Based on YourZodiac Sign!" The hook: Sung to the tune of Aquarius: When the spoon is in my great big mouth, and Jupiter aligns with Mar-r-r-r-r-s bars . . . The skinny: The astrological chart I had done in college indicated I'm going to die a sudden and unexpected death, so I've been waiting for an anvil to drop on my head since....
