| A mixed drink with a history | | Posted Tuesday, January 31, 2006 11:28:09 AM by Kate Grant | One of my favorite mixed drinks is Bloody Mary. I love the surprise of that tarty salty taste, especially when you taste it for the first time and wait for something sweet, or mild, at worst. Making a mixed drink with alcohol is not a hard thing to learn, even if its your first time.
Here's a recipe for the above mentioned drink, and one of the most popular mixed drinks, Bloody Marry. The "Bloody" part should tell you there's tomato juice involved...
But first, aren't you curious who was that Marry, who got herself such a nickname? It was Queen Mary I of England, who reigned as Queen of England for a short five years, still managing to burn at the stake more than 300 people for heresy. Still, the drink itself is very nice.
What you'll need is an old fashioned glass, or a high ball glass, than mix together 3 oz tomato juice,1 1/2 oz vodka,1/2 oz lemon juice,1 dash of Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, ground pepper and hot pepper sauce. Stir well and garnish with a celery stalk. Add Ice.
If you don't want the alcohol, you can always make Virgin Marry, by simply not adding Vodka...

| | | 2 for $20: Buffalo's Southwest Cafe | | Posted Wednesday, January 17, 2007 2:59:09 PM by Blog57 Team | | I'd been promising a homemade meal to my friend Matt since we met in October. Considering it hasn't happened yet, I figured I could hold him over with a free lunch. So the other day we headed to Buffalo's Southwest Cafe in Holt. I'd driven by the place a few times and since Matt works on that side of town we decided to give it a try. The Mood Buffalo's is Southwest indeed. Wood paneling lines the walls which are covered with Southwestern stuff - photos, saddles, horseshoes, lassos, posters and tons of other stuff just to remind diners where they are eating. .... | |

| | | The new spirit of east-west detente | | Posted Saturday, January 13, 2007 12:55:37 PM by Blog57 Team | | Vodka. It is one of Russia's biggest exports and James Bond's preferred tipple, and it is, by all accounts, taking over the world. Well, perhaps that's pushing it a bit. But the smooth, clear liquid - the purest of all spirits - is certainly making its presence felt in the drinks market. According to alcohol-market analysts - how about that for a job? - sales of vodka and other spirits are growing "rapidly" in the UK and elsewhere. So much so, in fact, that vodka sales in Britain are expected to overtake whisky in the next four years. Volume sales of vodka are rising at an average of more than 5.5% annually, and by 2010 are forecast to reach 8.405 million cases, says IWSR (International Wine & Spirit Record), the company responsible for the latest data. Russian devotees would have us believe that arriving at this point symbolises a maturing in the British drinker's palate, and that they have been right about its superiority all along.... | |

| | | Meet the brew goddess | | Posted Sunday, November 19, 2006 12:53:03 PM by Blog57 Team | | The three fermentation tanks -- Keys, Jerry and Drums are painted with Grateful Dead icons -- hold 225 gallons of what's on its way to becoming Thompson's Brewery & Public House's Hammerhead pale ale. For the 31-year-old Kent, there's no place she'd rather be than overseeing the process that turns Cascade hops, water, malted barley and yeast into beer. She's been on the job for a few months as Thompson's brewer, and like a baker watching dough rise, she still holds her breath a bit while her batch takes shape. "This is the stage where you cross your fingers," she said while checking the yeast. As part of the McMenamins chain, Kent uses established recipes. But as with all fermentation, there's subtle art in the transformation. For the first time, Kent also is behind the Kris Kringle seasonal ale that will debut by Monday at Thompson's and Boon's Treasury.... | |

| | | Uganda: Hope for HIV Positive Children | | Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 10:54:18 PM by Blog57 Team | | No amount of strength will prepare you for the mixed emotions that you feel when you walk into Jajas' Home and meet the children who are brought there everyday. Jajjas' Home, located in Lweza on Naziba Hill along Entebbe Road, was started in 2000 to rehabilitate children living with HIV/Aids through the provision of quality care. Ruth Sims, the Director, remembers the day that they started. "Mothers who were HIV positive would come to MildMay Centre alone. It was so heart-breaking because they left their children behind. They would only live for two years and then die. One morning I talked to my colleagues and we decided to start up a centre to help these unfortunate children but we had only 50 pounds in the bank."| Within the second week, Ruth realised that she could not handle the growing number of children with the little space that she had.... | |

| | | Office treats send mixed message | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 6:54:54 PM by Blog57 Team | | Kathy Angel has a hard time controlling her sweet tooth, particularly at the office. Theres the morale clubs monthly cake celebration. The doughnut holes. The candy dishes. "I can sort of plan for it because I know its coming," said Angel, 42, of Farmington, Mich.Angel represents 74 percent of workers who told researchers that cake, cookies and candy are served sometimes, if not always, to celebrate special occasions in the office. While the finding is no surprise to office workers, it comes as the United States struggles with rising obesity and as adults move to take soft drinks and junk food out of schools. Treats permeate workplaces, even though 53 percent of employees surveyed said their company encourages good health habits through lifestyle resources. Harris Interactive conducted the survey in May and June for Marlin Co., a workplace publishing firm in North Haven, Conn.... | |

| | | Don Omar and friends bring draw mixed crowd | | Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 3:00:39 PM by Blog57 Team | | HIDALGO — Who'd have thought the body-shaking beats of a reggaeton show would be a family affair? Plenty of half-pint fans turned out for the Don Omar "King of Kings" concert last night at Dodge Arena. Among the teens and trendsters, families snaked in and out of concession lines and T-shirt vendors up and down the arena's halls. As for Edinburg resident Blanca Alcala, she said she likes reggaeton just fine. But the real reason she bought tickets to see Don Omar, Aventura and Rakim & Ken-Y stood just level with her hips, impatiently dancing and demanding ice cream. "I came for my kids," she said, shifting two large soft drinks in her hands and gesturing at 6-year-old Abigail. "She's been asking me all week when we'd be going to the concert. "She was all excited in line, too, saying, ‘We're almost there, we're almost there." Alcala's other son and daughter, 13-year-old Miguel and 12-year-old Leslie, were already sitting down upstairs, she said, anxious for the show to begin.... | |

| | | Local wet-dry issue prompts congregation to put anti-alcohol ... | | Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 1:03:16 PM by Blog57 Team | | With the vote on whether to make Angelina County wet coming next week, one church has proposed changing its covenant statement to include a condemnation on the distribution of alcohol. Angelina County residents go to the polls Tuesday to vote on Propositions 1 and 2, on whether to allow over-the-counter beer and wine purchases and mixed drinks in restaurants without a club membership. Lufkin's First Baptist elected Oct. 18 in its Church Conference to propose an amendment adding a statement against the distribution and abuse of alcohol, according to a church publication. The amendment was approved by a two-thirds majority vote. The proposed amendment, with the revised language in italics, reads: "Believing that each person is individually responsible for his or her actions, we will avoid any and all behavior that is harmful to ourselves and to our Christian influence of others and will use our influence to stop the distribution and abuse of alcohol, the abuse of drugs and all other actions that are contrary to the teachings of Christ.... | |
