A little planning and a few simple recipes and party tips from Oscar party veterans are all that's required. For foods for the big event, which takes place Feb. 25, think finger-friendly. In short, to make you feel the same way love does.High-end chocolatiers and gourmet chefs are creating this sensation by adding a little chile to chocolate."We're seeing it more and more, especially with chipotle, which has a very smoky flavor that plays really well with chocolate," says Alexander Morozoff, publisher of Cocoaroma, a new, San Francisco-based magazine for chocolate connoisseurs. "I find it to be really interesting that they are making a connection with the origins of chocolate."Chocolate, you see, wasn't always the sweet confection it is today....

Baked eel and crapaud soup are two interesting foods which we will not find on many Guyanese menus. The recipes for these and many other interesting dishes are in the book An Adventure in Caribbean Cuisine produced by the Caribbean Association of Home Economists (CAHE). CAHE was founded in 1972 and has membership from among home economics educators, health educators, nutritionists and dieticians from the English-speaking Caribbean, Puerto Rico and the USA. This book is a product of the Research Committee of CAHE, and it is intended also to serve as a guide through "the romance of the traditional, and the excitement of the contemporary in Caribbean cuisine." The book is organised into two parts. The first part presents some of the traditional recipes from 17 Caribbean states....

Future kitchen will suggest menu

NEW YORK - In the future, we'll still run out of milk, drip globs of egg on the countertop and have trouble remembering recipes. Instead of resorting to low-tech solutions such as sponges, shopping lists and hand-worn cookbooks, some predict the kitchen itself will respond to our every need. At this year's Wired NextFest - a sort of high-tech world's fair featuring hundreds of interactive exhibits that wrapped up recently at the Javits Center in New York - GE unveiled the Kitchen of the Future, a shiny, humming unit that's still only conceptual, although GE designers say in two or three decades it will be the norm. The device is self-aware enough to know when it's running low on essential ingredients, and it can suggest recipes using items it does have. Ask it how to make something - the shiny unit responds to voice commands - and then a recipe pops up on the display....

Readers cookbook has recipes for the heart

After reading your column on Sept. 27, I ordered the cookbook from The West End Baptist Church. I wanted it because Chubby Lamb was my father-in-law, and I have only one of his recipes. I have asked many where I might find more recipes or even a cookbook with some in it and have come up with nothing. I was very excited to be able to get the ones that are in the cookbook you wrote about. If you have any other readers who have any of his recipes, I would love to have more. The recipe I have from him is marinated shrimp. If you want it, I will send it to you. Thanks for your column. Sarah Lamb Sarah, You are more than welcome and thank you for reading! It always warms the cockles* of my heart to hear this column has helped someone! *Cockle: A bivalve mollusk with a heart-shaped shell....

Where To Eat Now

Mama's Hot Tamales Café. On weekends, a line of wooden tamale carts runs along the eastern edge of MacArthur Park, each run by a vendor from a different part of Latin America selling his or her particular kind of tamale: banana-leaf-wrapped Oaxacan tamales oozing black mole sauce, wet chicken tamales from Honduras, green-chile tamales from Acapulco, densely sweet little torpedoes from El Salvador and grainy tamales from Michoacán. The driving force behind the vending district is Mama's Hot Tamales Café, a sprawling, brightly painted complex across the street from the park that provides the kinds of curatorial services and logistical support to the district's tamale masters and also happens to sell a rotating selection of the handmade tamales in the restaurant itself. 2124 W. Seventh St., L.A., (213) 487-7474....

This week on DVD

WATCH THIS FIRST! Wordplay (2006, PG, $25) Taking a page from hit feel-good documentaries such as Spellbound and Mad Hot Ballroom, this engaging look into the focused, sometimes obsessive, world of crossword puzzle workers might not have the heart of those films, but it's still a welcome way to fill in your blank time. At the center of the doc is New York Times crossword puzzle editor Will Shortz, a degreed "enigmatologist" (that's a 14-letter word for "puzzle pro") who plays host to a parade of oddballs each year at the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. Like Spellbound, Wordplay introduces us to several wannabe champs, each of whom comes with his or her own set of quirks -- from the redheaded college kid who plows through puzzles on his computer while his buds drink beer, to the gay ex-champ who combs through massive and dusty antique dictionaries for unfamiliar words....
