| Bar drinks at the pleasure of you own home | | Posted Tuesday, January 31, 2006 11:21:55 AM by Kate Grant | A well equipped home bar is something within your reach. All you need are a few tools, the right glasses some basic alcohol and a few extras, and you are on your way to mix some drinks for your friends pleasure. Here is your bar guide and a few ideas, to make your home bar the toast of the town.
A good place to begin is finding a corner in which you can arrange everything you need. If you have the room for it, you can always build yourself a proper bar, adding a few bar stools and decorations. But if this is not possible, a shelf or a small cupboard will do nicely.
You'll need the right glasses for those bar drinks you're about to fix. If you want a Long Island Iced Tea for example, use a highball glass, pour cocktails and Margaritas (recipe to follow!) into a cocktail glass with a stem, and for a Whiskey Sour, an "old fashioned" is the right glass.
With the glasses in place, let's move on to the "wet" part, and some very common and popular bar drinks: Vodka, for some Sex on the Beach, White Russian and Bloody Mary, Gin, for the ever popular Gin and Tonic, Rum, for Daiquiris, Scotch, for Rusty nail, and of course,Tequila and the promised recipe for the most popular of them all, Margarita.
Dip the rim of a margarita glass with salt, after rubbing it with lime rind, then mix 1 1/2 oz Tequila, 1/2 oz Triple Sec 1 oz Lemon or Lime Juice Ice, shake well and pour into the glass. Learn a few bar tricks for the amusement of your guests, and you're on your way!

| | | They're charging me for THAT? | | Posted Friday, February 02, 2007 12:52:34 PM by Blog57 Team | | The Ormond Beach couple ate a nice, relaxing meal. But their bill was a real shocker. "Our sandwiches came to $16," said Don Gehring. "The bar tab -- for two drinks apiece -- was $32." Gehring is one of a legion of restaurant-goers who have been shocked by unexpected charges on the check. Sometimes the charges were in fine print on the menu; but with bar drinks, often the prices aren't posted anywhere. "Now when we go into a restaurant, we have to ask for a bar menu," he said. "We don't want to have another surprise at the end of the night." The lesson? Research pays off when dining in the Daytona Beach area, where some mixed cocktails sell for as little as $2 (in a two-for-one "Happy Hour" special) and others, made with specified brands of alcohol (the so-called "call" drinks) cost as much as $8.50 each.... | |

| | | Superbowl Drinks | | Posted Thursday, February 01, 2007 2:54:34 PM by Blog57 Team | | It's Super Bowl time, and whether you watch it for the game or the commercials, it is always a good excuse to party. While beer is, of course, the classic football beverage, there are some creative alternatives if you don't drink beer or just happen to be in the mood for something different. It's not a bad idea to show your guests how to make the drinks themselves or keep a recipe card out on the bar so that you aren't missing the entire game by mixing other's drinks. There are a myriad of sports-themed drinks you can try, but below are just a few that are fun and definitely different from an aluminum can. This first recipe makes four tart, refreshing shooters and can be drunken like tequila — with sugar instead of salt, of course. The Blitz 1 oz tequila1 oz rum1 oz gin1 oz vodka1 oz cranberry1 oz sour mix splash of tonic water In a large shaker half filled with ice, combine all ingredients except tonic water.... | |

| | | Cocktails give old ideas a new twist | | Posted Wednesday, December 27, 2006 2:52:57 PM by Blog57 Team | | Mix the familiar with something new. That's Jeffrey Zarnow's recipe for a standout holiday cocktail, and that's our theme for this collection of drinks from Zarnow and others. "There are certain kinds of flavors and styles that people expect - cinnamon and apple and nutmeg, things that go with the season," said Zarnow, a Wichita, Kan., native who created Starr African Rum last year."I think the best holiday cocktails are the ones that play into that but do it in a novel way." The approach seems to be working. Last month, shortly after a flattering write-up in the New York Times, Zarnow was back in his hometown to thank supporters with a reception/taste testing at the Anchor. "We ran out of rum by the end of the night," he said. "That's always a good sign." CHOCOLATE RUM BALL Cinnamon-tinged Mexican chocolate (Ibarra is a popular brand) gives this hot drink its holiday flavor.... | |

| | | Cook Islands: Paradise awaits on Aitutaki | | Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 6:53:09 PM by Blog57 Team | | AITUTAKI, Cook Islands (AP) -- This tiny spot in the South Pacific was one of the last places William Bligh, captain of the H.M.S. Bounty, visited before the infamous 1789 mutiny. Bligh, set adrift along with 18 members of his crew shortly after leaving Aitutaki, later reached Timor and successfully returned to England. Today, this island paradise is visited more by those living in nearby Australia and New Zealand than Europeans and North Americans, although it's an idyllic vacation spot filled with friendly people and breathtaking scenery. Traveling to Aitutaki last summer, I spent 11 days on this remote island that sits in the corner of a glistening lagoon surrounded by a handful of smaller islands called "motus." For honeymooners and those looking to get away from it all, Aitutaki provides the perfect haven.... | |

| | | NMSU, fraternity, bar sued over El Paso student's death | | Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 3:02:31 PM by Blog57 Team | | LAS CRUCES -- New Mexico State University, a fraternity and a Las Cruces bar face a lawsuit over the death of a fraternity member who died of alcohol poisoning after drinking on his 21st birthday. The family of Steven Judd filed the wrongful-death lawsuit last Friday in state district court in Santa Fe. It alleges the bar's owners, the fraternity brothers, the national fraternity organization and the university contributed to Judd's death either through direct actions or by failing to crack down on dangerous practices. Judd, an El Pasoan who graduated from Franklin High School, fell into a coma hours after being served 10 to 15 drinks at the Hurricane Alley bar on Nov. 18, 2004, his 21st birthday. Delta Chi fraternity brothers took him back to the fraternity house to let him sleep but called an ambulance after dawn.... | |

| | | Because we all love free drinks | | Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 1:06:41 PM by Blog57 Team | | Taking a cue from every self-respecting college student who's ever made the conscious decision to nap through Friday classes, I've got to tell you, the weekend really does start on Thursday. The last couple Thursdays in Austin have been off the chain, and this Thursday should be no different. First off, Trae, the latest rapper about to burst out of H-town in a very big way, is performing at Bongo's down by campus. I don't have a whole lot of details on this one, but the man, best known for his ubiquitous single "Swang," is definitely on some next tip. Seriously. Based on street buzz alone, I'm guessing he'll pull quite a crowd. Meanwhile, over on Red River, the nice folks from the hip Jewish rag Heeb, are passing through town on their way to host the Second Heeb Film Festival in Houston this weekend.... | |

| | | Man shoots up bar, gets arrested after standoff | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 7:05:38 AM by Blog57 Team | | An armed man who had fired shots inside an Aston bar yesterday was apprehended last evening after a standoff with dozens of police officers. Police said the man, Bill Whalen, was taken without incident by the SWAT tactical response team of central Delaware County just before 6:30 p.m. Authorities had sent in a robot with a camera, which showed Whalen, who was alone, walking around and occasionally sitting at the bar. His handgun was on the bar when he was arrested. Whalen was taken to the Aston Township Police Department. The incident began early yesterday afternoon after Whalen, distraught over the loss of his business, entered Harry Kat's Pub and Grille, police said. The bar is next door to Zeke's Auto Repair, which was owned by Whalen and went out of business a few months ago.... | |
