| Alcoholic drinks - a mix made in heaven | | Posted Tuesday, January 31, 2006 11:18:38 AM by Kate Grant | Remember "Cocktail"? The movie that made bar tending such a hip profession, sending hordes of young men to try those bottle twirling tricks at home? Well, I was wondering, did one of those guys ever found out who gave those funny names to all those alcoholic drinks?
There are many mixed drinks, to please just about anyone with a taste for alcohol. (For non alcoholic drinks, join us next time...) Serve them warm (Anyone said "Punch"?), on Halloween or on the holiday season, or cold and frozen in the summer, mix alcohol of you choice and fruit in a blender, and you've got yourself an alcoholic smoothie.
The possibilities are almost endless. Did you know that you can turn the most popular alcoholic drinks into Jello shots? (And we mean anything! Ever tried beer Jello shots? Didn't think so...) Yes, those shots that slip down your throat and make you drunk and happy in no time.
What you need to remember is, you have to add enough water to make it set. The top alcoholic drinks that are made into Jello shots are of the sweeter kind, like Daiquiri, Margarita and Mai Tai, which makes them much easier to swallow. Enjoy the party!

| | | Sober decision on advert ban | | Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 2:54:01 PM by Blog57 Team | | The Food and Drug Administration is finally backing off its error in banning all advertisements of alcoholic beverages. The FDA is properly accepting the verdict of the Council of State that the agency had no business meddling in this issue. To its credit, the FDA now says it will clear up the confusing paperwork and bow out of the controversy within a week or so. That puts matters back roughly where they were a few months ago. While it is not accepting the defeat gracefully, at least the FDA accepts it acted wrongly. There is no shortage these days of government and non-government groups eager to tell us what to do. Lamentably, many are willing to use force to implement their views. Those behind the campaign to ban liquor advertising obviously had ulterior motives.... | |

The company said revenues had grown in the mid to high single-digit range in most markets during the four months to the end of October in local currency terms and it expected to improve its recovery of commodity driven cost increases this half. The update sent the company's shares up as much as 3.6 percent, before they eased back to be up 1.3 percent at A$7.09 in afternoon trade in a wider market down 0.4 percent. | | | Moving on after divorce | | Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 10:59:44 AM by Blog57 Team | | Q. My husband and the father of my seven children filed for divorce after 29 years of marriage. He met a widow and moved in with her a month later. My husband was an alcoholic and mean-spirited. With this woman, he no longer drinks, is home every night and life is perfect. We never got that respect. He claims the change is because she's so good and we're so evil. I was told I could get an annulment, but that would make me feel like I threw all those years out the door and make my kids feel unsubstantial. I'll never stop loving my husband, but is God going to forgive everything he's done intentionally from the drinking, brutality and womanizing, and also this other woman? Has going down the right path really gotten me nowhere? In the end, are my husband and his new companion going to end up in the same place because God is all forgiving? I'm only in my mid-50s.... | |

| | | Cooper City leaders met after big Happy Hour | | Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 11:00:29 AM by Blog57 Team | | A group of about six Cooper City government officials bought about 20 alcoholic drinks in 45 minutes before a recent City Commission meeting, according to their bar tab and the bar owner. An Aug. 22 tab from Landlubbers Raw Bar & Grill in Cooper City lists the drinks ordered by city staff members and commissioners. Because of two-for-one drink specials, the bill came to about $75, including the tip. The credit card receipt, obtained by Miami Herald news partner WFOR-CBS 4, was signed by the city's utilities director, Michael Bailey. The city clerk's office could not say Tuesday whether Bailey submitted the receipt for reimbursement by the city. Bailey couldn't be reached for comment. City Commissioner Elliot Kleiman said he wasn't monitoring the other officials at the Aug.... | |

| | | Drinks group launches awareness campaign | | Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 12:56:05 PM by Blog57 Team | | The Portman Group has launched a campaign to raise awareness of its code for responsible alcohol marketing. The aim is to remind people about its Code of Practice on the Naming, Packaging and Promotion of Alcoholic Drinks because the number of complaints has recently been low. A campaign poster and leaflet is being sent to police licensing officers, alcohol agencies, trading standards and other non-industry groups. Portman chief executive David Poley said: “The low numbers of complaints could be simply because the industry is obeying the code and there is nothing for people to complain about. “We want to make sure, however, that people are aware that there is an effective body they can turn to if they believe the drinks industry is failing in its standards." Almost 150 complaints have been made in the code's 10-year existence, leading to 70 products being re-designed or removed.... | |

| | | Huge turnout is expected today at local polling places based on record early vote | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 6:58:43 AM by Blog57 Team | | It's last call for those 75 percent of Angelina County's registered voters who have yet to cast a ballot in the November general election. Election Day polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. Just a few reasons close to home that have helped draw a record-setting early voter turnout for a gubernatorial election in Angelina County include naming a new county judge, the Precinct 4 county commissioner's race, and the county court-at-law No. 1 judge's race. But the real key to drawing out the voters this year, noted Angelina County election administrator Bill Shanklin, is the issue on whether to extend the sale of wine and beer beyond restaurants and clubs — as is currently allowed — to retail stores in Angelina County. Voters also will decide whether to keep requiring people to purchase memberships when they purchase alcoholic drinks at restaurants and clubs.... | |

| | | Battle over flavored alcohol to reach county | | Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 2:59:30 AM by Blog57 Team | | COLUMBUS - An anti-teen drinking coalition will take its battle against flavored alcoholic beverages to the county courthouse on Tuesday. Tuesday morning's meeting of the Platte County Board of Supervisors will be the next forum for Project Extra Mile's fight against the reclassification of the beverages allowing them to be taxed at a lower rate, which make them more appealing to teens. The coalition has filed a lawsuit claiming the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission's decision to reclassify flavored alcoholic beverages circumvents state law.On Tuesday, the Platte board will be asked to sign a resolution supporting the coalition's position on flavored alcoholic beverages, said Diane Riibe, executive director of Project Extra Mile in Omaha. Riibe was the guest speaker for Thursday's meeting of the coalition's local chapter. The coalition was unsuccessful last month in a request for a City Council committee's resolution of support, Riibe said. The Project Extra Mile lawsuit seeks to order the liquor commission to tax and regulate such products as Mike's Hard Lemonade and Smirnoff Ice, also known as alcopops, as liquor, not beer.... | |
